In the first book Rhythm Section, Stephanie's parents are murdered by terrorists. Her life degenerates into a mess of drugs and prostitution. When she learns the identity of one of the killers, she gets a gun and tries to kill him.
But her attempt is interrupted by British intelligence. They give her the choice of jail or joining a secret agency as a trained assassin. When she decides to join they don't expect her to finish the military-style training in brutal conditions.
But she does and gets a new identity-Petra Reuter, German hired killer. A surgeon even creates a bullet scar on her shoulder to add to her profile. Off she goes into the underworld of terror as a secret agent.
Burnell's plots are complex and the four books are not easy reads, but worth the effort. Did I model Kristen Kerry after Petra? Maybe a little.
